The group KANA / Who if Not Architect was formed in December 2015. The group is a non-governmental organization engaged in educational, research, and activist work. The name is an homage to one of the most famous Montenegrin architects, Svetlana Kana Radević, and an acronym for a rhetorical question of who will step up and point out the faults and injustices of how the urban space has been produced and developed: “Ko, ako ne arhitekt?”, meaning “Who, if not an architect?”.

KANA / Who if Not Architect has four members and collaborates with several associates on a case-by-case basis.
Vision and Mission
KANA / Who if not Architect is an independent expert organization focusing on the issues of urban development, architecture, and architectural heritage preservation in Montenegro. We are interested in combining our knowledge to develop the research, activist, curatorial, and critical work relevant to the current spatial development challenges. In our regular practice, we have developed a community-oriented approach: we provide expert help and advice to the local groups and neighborhood organizations interested in contesting the urban development projects threatening the communal quality of life.

  • Urban planning approach: Public Participation in Planning of the Blok 5 in Podgorica (2017) – on social and spatial change brought about in the last three decades.
  • Planning Against the City (2018) – on urban planning documents and historic heritage preservation.
  • Cypress Revolution: The Importance of Public Participation in Urban Planning Decision-making Process in Montenegro (2019) – on the processes that lower the quality of life in our cities. The paper was presented at an international scientific conference “Environmental impact of illegal construction, poor planning, and design – IMPEDE 2019” in Belgrade and published in the resulting conference proceedings
